Olatunji Disu, commissioner of police(CP), Rivers State police command, has been honoured as the CP of the year at the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) awards and commendation ceremony.
The award held on Monday, April 15, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
Disu was nominated as the commissioner of police of the year alongside Danjuma Aboki, CP Imo command and CP Augustina Ogbodo, CP Ebonyi command.
The supercop became famous for restructuring the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) in Lagos, under the leadership of former governor Akiwunmi Ambode. He is also a strong proponent of policing with consent ideology.
Disu became the CP of Rivers in November 2023, and within five months, he has recorded significant achievements in combating crime and maintaining peace.
Notably, he led the neutralization of high-profile criminals like “2Baba,” responsible for the murder of SP Bako Angbashim, and “General Ugly,” a notorious cult leader.
Additionally, Disu’s proactive approach resulted in the elimination of “General Odiereke,” a notorious crime lord, after an eight-year manhunt. He also oversaw the neutralization of “John Togo,” a fearsome sea pirate responsible for terrorizing coastal communities.
Disu’s tenure also saw successful crackdowns on criminal syndicates, including a car-snatching ring, and the discovery and neutralization of wanted cult leaders and their lieutenants.
Utilizing social media effectively, particularly through his active presence on X, formerly Twitter, Disu bolstered the police force’s reputation, fostering transparency and community collaboration. He has also introduced state-of-the-art technology, such as a fleet of drones, to enhance law enforcement operations, particularly in surveillance and rescue missions.
The award ceremony serves a dual purpose: firstly, to acknowledge and celebrate the bravery, dedication, integrity, and patriotism of officers; secondly, to motivate other officers to excel in their duties by following the example set by the awardees.
While congratulating all nominees and winners, the IGP reaffirmed the dedication of the force to fostering a culture of excellence and professionalism among its personnel.
