Police Demote Cop For Attempted Extortion Of Lagos Drone Operator

In a swift response to a viral video showcasing an officer attempting to extort money from a drone operator, the Lagos State Police Command has demoted the involved officer.

The incident, which took place on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, drew significant reactions from the public, leading to an official investigation and subsequent disciplinary action.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed two police officers demanding a permit from the drone operator.

The interaction raised questions among netizens about the necessity of such permits for drone operation in public spaces.

In a statement, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the demotion of the officer from the rank of Inspector to Sergeant.

Hundeyin emphasized that while the officers were correct in asking for a permit, the demand for money was unprofessional and warranted disciplinary measures.

“His disciplinary process has been concluded. He has been reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant,” Hundeyin stated in a conversation with our correspondent on Saturday.

The police spokesperson further clarified the legal framework surrounding drone operations in Nigeria.

According to Nigerian aviation laws, operators of drones weighing more than 250 grams are required to secure a permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

“In response to a now-viral video showing two police officers demanding a drone permit from a drone-operating individual on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the Lagos State Police Command wishes to clarify that the police officers acted within the ambit of the law to demand to see a permit. For emphasis, Nigerian aviation laws stipulate that a permit must be obtained from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the operation of drones weighing more than 250 grams anywhere within the country,” the statement read.
