Farmers/Herders Clash: 3 Killed, 8 Injured in Kodomun Community, Adamawa

Three people have been killed and eight others injured in a clash between farmers and herders in Kodomun, a community in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State

In the community long known for similar confrontations, the fresh incident is said to have been triggered by the alleged killing of a youth in Kodomun by suspected herders.

Emotion was said to have flared afterwards, escalating to the neighbouring Kudiri, Sabonlayi, Kwayine and Gorogbakai villages.

The bloody commotion was, however, said to have been addressed by press time Thursday.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State, SP Suleiman Nguroje said a combined security team dispatched to the crisis area had restored normalcy.

A meeting on the crisis was quickly held at the palace of the Hama Batta, Homun Alhamdu Gladstone Teneke, the paramount traditional leader in Demsa.

Addressing the meeting, the Executive Chairman of Demsa Local Government Council, Akham Jalo, appealed for calm.

He blamed both the farmers and the herders for allegedly concealing the truth over the causes of the lingering crisis, urged the farmers to always report the destruction of their crops to the authorities for compensation, and warned the herders to restrain from grazing around farm areas to avoid cattle straying into farms.

Earlier in his remark, the Hama Batta, Homun Alhamdu Gladstone Teneke said the state government’s directives that herders withdraw their cattle during cropping and rainy season until after harvest in February every year must be strictly complied with.

The meeting asked leaders of the warring groups to fish out the culprits in the latest clash and submit their names for prosecution.
