The FCT Police Command has confirmed that 16 out of the 31 suspects arrested for allegedly vandalizing government property worth N1 billion in various parts of the nation’s capital have been charged in court.
Disu made this known during a press briefing on Friday, where he said the command took such actions in its resolute stride towards curbing the persistent menace of vandalism and theft of public infrastructure in the territory.
CP Disu gave the names of the suspects that were arraigned before the court to include Abubakar Adamu, Emmanuel, John Eze, Emeka Ezekiel, Ahmad Suleiman, Dennis Chigozie, Ismail Usman, and Victor Ezeokoye.
Izundu Fidelis, Alex Okechukwu Eddy Jonathan R. Obi, Simon Samuel, Mubarak Lawal, Okafor Ekene, Usman Lawal, Shuaibu Yahaya, and James Edu.
Some of the items recovered during the raid include 115 units of manhole covers and drainage covers and five (5) motorcycles. Stripped parts of electric transformers, Industrial scaffoldings. Bundles of armored and insulated cables, Copper wires, fiber optic cables, twenty-nine (29) industrial/solar batteries, solar panels, and several other stolen infrastructure materials. Seventy-five (75) bags of cement, Security doors. Three (03 pieces of 5 kg cylinders, Power-generating sets, Two (2) water pumping machines, Ninety-five (95) cartoons of floor tiles, water board underground pipes, One (1) unit of mobile air conditioner, Twelve (12) large-size solar panels, Three (03) iron chairs, Tractor spare parts, One golf vehicle with Reg. No. KUJ 236 BW carrying suspected stolen scaffolds, Two (02) pieces of vehicle chassis number templates, and Large quantity of suspected stolen electric changeover.
He said the development also followed an intensive crackdown on scrap dealer shops, including Panteker, which he said culminated in the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of substantial quantities of stolen and vandalized government assets, including manhole covers, armored cables, and streetlights.
According to him, the arrests were the result of intelligence-led operations conducted across various locations within the FCT.
CP Disu, however, noted that the operation underscored the unwavering commitment of the police command to safeguarding public infrastructure and holding criminal elements accountable for their actions.
The police commissioner, while reaffirming the command’s dedication to maintaining law and order, urged residents of the FCT to actively support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities promptly to the police.
He said the battle against the desecration of public infrastructure is not for the police alone, saying it is a collective duty of every individual to protect the lifelines of their communities.
“And upon their arraignment, the suspects entered pleas of ‘not guilty” and have since been remanded at the Keffi Correctional Centre, pending further proceedings
