There’s no Fulani herders attack in Enugu – Police

The Enugu State Police Command has denied claims that Fulani herdsmen recently carried out deadly attacks on villages in the state, reportedly killing at least 25 people. The command described the reports as false, sensational, and intended to mislead the public.

In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, the police said their investigations revealed that the report was entirely fabricated. According to Ndukwe, the names of affected villages and the incidents cited in the reports did not occur, and the publication appeared to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the efforts of security agencies maintaining peace in the state.

The police reaction follows reports by some media platforms alleging that attacks by herdsmen had devastated agrarian communities in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state, leading to deaths, injuries, and mass displacement of residents to neighbouring Anambra and Kogi States. The accounts portrayed the local communities as overwhelmed and in despair.

Describing the reports as speculative and lacking journalistic integrity, the police criticised the use of vague language such as “at least,” which they said undermined the credibility of the publication. Ndukwe further cited the State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, who condemned the dissemination of what he called inaccurate and mischievous information designed to incite fear.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining public safety, the police command urged residents to disregard the reports and continue to place their trust in the state’s security mechanisms
