2027 Elections: IGP Disu Steps Up Security Plans to Protect IDPs, Vulnerable Voters

The Nigeria Police Force says it is strengthening its security preparations for the 2027 general elections, with particular attention to protecting internally displaced persons (IDPs), persons with disabilities and other vulnerable voters.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disclosed this on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during a meeting with a delegation led by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mr Leonardo Santos Simão, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Disu said lessons from previous elections, including off-cycle polls, were shaping the Force's operational plans and training programmes. He added that police personnel and officers from other security agencies were undergoing training to improve coordination and strengthen election-security management.

He also highlighted ongoing threat assessments across police formations to guide deployments and targeted operations, particularly in vulnerable areas. According to him, the Force is working with other security agencies to ensure that internally displaced persons can exercise their electoral rights in a secure environment.

On election logistics, the IGP said the Police were collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to support the timely and secure distribution of electoral materials.

Earlier, Simão said the visit provided an opportunity to discuss Nigeria's election-security preparations amid wider security challenges across West Africa and the Sahel. He stressed the need to prevent political competition from degenerating into violence and sustain public confidence in the impartiality of the Police.

He also sought updates on lessons from previous elections and measures to protect vulnerable voters, including internally displaced persons.

The engagement underscores the importance of security coordination, impartial policing and protection of vulnerable groups as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
