Forgery Allegations Prompt FCT Police Action, Not Election Bias

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has debunked allegations circulating on social media, which claim that the Inspector General of Police is interfering in the upcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT 2024 elections.

On Friday, in a statement released by SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the command described the claims as “baseless and misleading.”

Adeh said the controversy arose from a formal petition filed with the FCT Police on November 25 by three individuals: Mr. Emeka Nze, Mr. Victorson Agbenson, and Mr. Johnchuks Onuanyim.

“The petitioners alleged that four individuals—Miss Grace Ike, Miss Edeh Sandra Ogechukwu, Mr. Yahaya Ndambabo, and Mr. Jide Oyekunle Adeyemi—had forged Postgraduate Diploma certificates purportedly issued by the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja,” SP Adeh explained.

The Command emphasized that its involvement is solely focused on investigating the allegations of forgery outlined in the petition.

“We have no interest in or influence over the NUJ elections or their outcomes,” she affirmed.

As part of the probe, the individuals named in the petition were invited for questioning to verify the authenticity of the claims. SP Adeh assured the public that these actions were standard procedure, aimed at upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparency.

“Our responsibility is to examine the facts and evidence presented. Linking this process to the NUJ elections is not only erroneous but also a deliberate attempt to mislead the public,” she added.

Addressing concerns about the timing of the investigation, SP Adeh urged all stakeholders to respect the integrity of the process.

“We appeal to everyone involved to avoid spreading baseless accusations that could undermine public trust in the police and democratic institutions. The outcome of our findings will be shared transparently and promptly,” she stated.

SP Adeh reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Police Force, led by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, to professionalism and impartiality. “The Force remains dedicated to its core mission of justice, security, and the protection of democratic values,” she concluded.

The FCT Police Command advised members of the public to direct any inquiries or seek updates regarding the investigation by contacting the Public Relations Officer via 07038979348.
