FCT Police Arrests Six ‘One Chance’ Groups, Impounds 296 Vehicles

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has made significant strides in its crackdown on criminal activities, announcing the arrest of six notorious ‘One Chance’ groups and the impounding of 296 vehicles for various violations.

The development underscores the Command’s commitment to enhancing security and restoring public confidence in the nation’s capital. The achievements were highlighted during a press briefing by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on December 3.

Among the notable arrests was the capture of six individuals linked to the infamous ‘One Chance’ operations that have plagued the city. On November 23, operatives from the State Intelligence Department detained Ibrahim Kabiru during a patrol on Ahmadu Bello Way. Items recovered from his vehicle included a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, a knife, scissors, mobile phones, and stolen luggage. Kabiru is in custody and will face legal proceedings upon the conclusion of investigations.

On November 6, three suspects—Hyelda Aliyu, 29; Mathias Nwosu, 40; and Blessing Ukachukwu, 49—were arrested for impersonating law enforcement officers to carry out abductions. The operation also led to the recovery of two vehicles, a silver Toyota Corolla (Reg. No. KUJ 27 TY) and a blue Mazda 323 (Reg. No. RBC 711 XL). The suspects have reportedly confessed and are awaiting trial.

Another success was the rescue of Doris Gabriel, a heavily pregnant woman abducted by a ‘One Chance’ gang posing as commercial vehicle operators. Operatives from the Karimo Division apprehended one suspect, Ikechukwu Ngerem, at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to capture his accomplices.

Traffic Violations Crackdown

In addition to combating ‘One Chance’ crimes, the Command intensified efforts to enforce traffic laws, resulting in the impounding of 296 vehicles. Violations ranged from the use of unauthorized tinted glasses to driving with incomplete or defaced number plates. CP Disu emphasized that these measures are aimed at curbing criminal activities often facilitated by such vehicles.

Community Partnership

CP Disu stressed the importance of public vigilance and cooperation in the fight against crime, urging residents to report suspicious activities through the Command’s communication channels.

“These achievements underscore our unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in the FCT,” said CP Disu. “Let us continue working together to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all residents.”

The FCT Police Command’s recent successes highlight the effectiveness of collaborative security efforts and the critical role of community engagement in maintaining public safety.
