Lawal Abubakar, a 16-year-old resident of Kasuwan-Gwari in Minna, Niger State, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to exhume a dead body from a grave in Chanchaga cemetery, the police authority said.

Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State police spokesperson, Monday, disclosed that Abubakar was arrested by the force operatives near the cemetery where he had gone to exhume a body from its grave.

“At about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, the police operatives attached to Chanchaga Division arrested one Lawali Abubakar of Kasuwan-Gwari, Minna,” a statement signed by Abiodun reads in parts. “The suspect was arrested at Chanchaga cemetery when he allegedly attempted to exhume a body from a grave.”

According to Abiodun, the suspect, during interrogation, confessed to have conspired with one Hamisu of the same address, who is currently at large, to get body parts and clothes from a body in the cemetery.

He added that the case was still under investigation and that efforts to apprehend Hamisu were ongoing.

This development is coming in just less than a month when police operatives in Kwara State arrested one Wasiu Omomose, 35, who was found with a head of a deceased 12-year-old boy “for money ritual purposes.”

The duo were arraigned on two-count charges of criminal conspiracy and exhuming of a corpse which according to the prosecution, “are contrary to and punishable under sections 97 and 226 of the Penal Code Law.”
